Ottawa/Gatineau Rock - Alternative - Grunge Project

Songs by Aaron Bergbusch

For Ottawa/Gatineau musicians interested in this project:

  • Below are downloadable recordings and charts of proposed songs to play in a live original set (9 songs).
  • For the live product, stylistic elements, arrangements and even the project name will depend on the collaboration of the players in the room.
  • Aaron Bergbusch will front the band, sing and play guitar and keyboard. Bass, drums, and a second guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/DJ/VJ are needed to round out the band.

1. Can't Stand Still

Live Vision:

  • This is potentially the opening song.
  • Stage is dark, the band is on the stage, but not the front man. 2/4  electric guitar riff comes in gently (chart says 4/4, but really, this riff feels like 2/4), add drums then bass and intensify a bit.  Then the front man comes on with a spotlight just as the last bar before the 5/4 riff is played.  The 5/4 riff is then held for a number of bars, with the bass doing dips into drop D, drum fill, then verse 1 begins.
  • Then we do the build into the RUN, RUN, RUN and get the groove humming for Verse 2.
  • I have a projector and we could add some frenetic/psychedelic videography at this point.
  • In the solo part, ideally we would add some crazy unexpected electronic part including sub-bass with the psychedelic imagery projected on a screen.
  • Ends with the "let ring" as on the chart/recording.
  • Front man says hello to the audience and introduces the band before Song 2.

2. Ordinary Life

Live Vision:

  • Drama, drama, drama is the key word for this song.
  • Some "breathing"-type electronica sound effect could work with the relatively slow beat of this song, added to videography of everyday, sterile office interiors and strip malls, fake smiles, scrolling through video shorts on a smartphone, and dark lonely nights... and then a transition to some unexpected magic (e.g. like the northern lights, shooting stars, whale breaching, a bear or wolf coming out of the woods, rainbow...  whatever...)
  • Lead guitar must step forward into the spotlight during the solo of this song.  Can be forward stage hard left or right.
  • Move right into next song after applause.

3. Impossible Beautiful

Live Vision:

  • "Shock and Awe", "Thunder", "Intensity"
  • Dynamic contrast of the chorus is key in this song.
  • Any video can focus more on the artist and/or visualizer effects.
  • A little break for stage setup after this song - some audience interaction needs to be planned/expected.

4. Time Slips By

Live Vision:

  • "Mysterious" vibe, culminating in desperation.
  • In the live set, this song functions to change things up (sound and visuals) in order to maintain the audience's attention.  It features piano and potentially a violin or theramin sound.
  • Extended improvised intro/jam on the piano/keyboard, setting the mood.  Maybe some sound effects added.
  • Visuals related to time - boredom in cubicles, boredom on job sites, boredom in classrooms and libraries, birthdays, daydreams, sailing ship adventures, sundials, mountains, deserts, riverbeds, and ancient ruins.

5. I Was Going To Save The World (Outdated Recording and Arrangement/Lyrics) (or 5. Back Up Man)

Live Vision:

  • Extended with sound effects for live.

6. Nothing To Live For, Except My...

Live Vision:

  • Extensive audience participation.
